The city was founded on March 15, 1954. As of May 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 51,966, with 18,132 households and a population density of 789.28 persons per km². The total area is 65.84 km². There is a relatively large population of people of Brazilian, Filipino, Peruvian, and mixed descent.
